"Offering Something Special at Every Stage of the Life Cycle"

ounded on August 24, 1882 by a group of 19 men, the history of Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, the third synagogue built in Canada, is a heritage in which we can all take pride: a story of faith, devotion, perseverance and freedom of worship.

The first location was on St. Catherine Street. In 1892 a new cornerstone was laid on the corner of Stanley and Cypress Streets, but by 1910, Stanley Street was so crowded that, with the instrumental assistance of Morimer B. Davis, a new property was purchased and, in 1911, a new Temple, unique in its Byzantine design, was completed and occupied. A new addition was completed in 1940 to accommodate for growth, but a tragic fire in 1957 forced a rebuilding of Temple. Today, Temple's home, at 4100 Sherbrooke West in Westmount, houses a congregation of about one thousand families and continues to grow every year.

Temple has hosted many distinguished world visitors, including Queen Elizabeth II, and Dr. Martin Luther King, under the leadership of Rabbi Harry J. Stern. Temple Emanu-El merged with Temple Beth Sholom in 1980 and Temple Rodeph Sholom in 1992.
