This week, Jake recorded the song Halev Sheli, by his favourite Israeli singer-songwriter, Ishay Ribo.

Here is the transliteration of the song so you can follow along:

Ribo a French-born, Hebrew-singing balladeer was recently interviewed by The Times of Israel. In the article, we learn that he moved to Israel from France with his family when he was 8 years old. (He is now 30). When Ribo writes, he draws from what is around him, whether that is the Torah portion of the week, a sermon given by someone, or sometimes from a commentary he read. “That’s my big influence,” he said. “My connection to Torah opens me up. I sit in synagogue and right after the Shabbat, I sit down and write down what I was thinking about. My heart goes a certain way from things I read or hear.” He thrills at the idea that secular Israelis, who often are completely unfamiliar with the words or texts he uses in his songs, are exposed to this spiritual music that connects them, that allows them to see things slightly differently. “No one is forcing anyone to listen to this,” he said. “It’s my goal and it took me a long time to accept it, that I have a mission, and that I love to sing and that’s what I know how to do , and whoever wants to listen to it is welcome. I sing what I have, and I just have to keep doing what I know how to do.”

Here are the Hebrew lyrics and a translation.

My Heart – Halev Sheli (translation)

My heart is split in two
What the maidservant did not see by the water
Like a storm from the sea, it throbs
Like Miriam’s timbrel, it beats
And there is no healing in the world

My heart surrenders
I stumble; I can no longer stand on my feet
Just a wreck with no purpose
And the heavens are like a wall to me
How shall I pass through the sea on dry ground

And only You can turn my mourning into dancing
To purify the sand
To soften everything within me
And only You know how to approach my heart
You erase all the pain within me
You heal my heart

My heart is split in two
Half of it is guilty, and half of it is for the sake of Heaven
Like a storm from the sea, it throbs
Like Miriam’s timbrel, it beats
And there is no healing in the world for my heart

And only You can turn my mourning into dancing
To purify the sand
To soften everything within me
And only You know how to approach my heart
You erase any pain within me
You heal my heart

And there another woe that bothers the flock
And there is no strong person who will call to God
Only me before a whole sea and a broken heart

And only You can turn my mourning into dancing
To purify the sand
To soften all in me
And only You know how to approach my heart
You erase any pain within me
You heal my heart

And only You can turn my mourning into dancing
To purify the sand
To sanctify everything within me
And only You know how to approach my heart
You erase any pain within me
You heal my heart

(Halev Sheli)
