Planned giving is about matching your tax and estate planning goals with your philanthropic ideals.

Through a variety of tax-effective programs, you can make better use of your assets and turn possessions you no longer use into gifts that help others and provide a tangible financial reward to both you and your loved ones.
Whether you give now or after your lifetime, an endowment fund, with proceeds directed according to your wishes, will ensure that your name and legacy are perpetuated for all time.

Why Consider Planned Giving?

As with most non-profit organizations, Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom relies heavily on charitable contributions to help cover operating costs. While a portion of our day-to-day expenses are funded by membership contributions, fundraising activities and other income sources, we could not continue to to provide our vast array of programs and services without the generous gifts we receive from our members, friends and family.

Your support of Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom with a “Planned Gift” can benefit you now, while providing Temple with much needed income in the future. Planned Giving allows you to tailor your charitable giving to meet your own financial needs, as well as those of Temple.

What is “Planned Giving”?

Planned Gifts are gifts made to Temple through your estate plan. By naming Temple as a beneficiary in your will, charitable trust, life insurance policy, or other estate planning tools, you can help Temple, while receiving immediate tax benefits for yourself or future benefits for your estate.

Planned Giving options

Planned Gifts to Temple may be made to a specific fund, such as our Torah School Fund, Building Fund, Cultural and Adult Education Fund, Social Action Fund, Religious Ritual Fund or Youth and Young Married Fund. Alternatively, making a gift to the General Fund would allow Temple the flexibility to allocate your gift wherever it is needed most.

In each of these areas, there are funds where the money would be put to immediate use and Endowment Funds where the money would be invested and the income generated would be used over the long term to pay for Temple’s needs while preserving and growing the capital.

  • Lifetime Gifts – If you have assets available now and could use the tax benefits immediately (without negatively impacting your lifestyle), you may wish to consider transferring the assets today.
  • Perpetual Gifts – Plan today to leave your legacy without parting with your assets during your lifetime. This may be done in the form of a bequest in your will or via an insurance policy.
  • Life Income Plans – Help secure our community’s future – and your own. Life income plans offer a way to give to charity and provide guaranteed annual income for yourself (and your spouse) for the rest of your lives. It can also save some of what you—and your heirs- would otherwise lose to taxes.
  • Corporate Gifting Strategies – Temple also offers a host of charitable giving strategies that combine charitable giving with effective estate planning and tax saving mechanisms specifically designed for private company owners.

Endowment Fund at Temple: Designated Funds and Growth Funds

Temple has General Funds, where all of the income generated by your gift is designated by the Trustees of the fund, based on Temple’s needs at the time, and Designated Funds, where you can designate how the income from your gift will be spent. Some options for Designated Funds include education, religious needs (e.g. books, Torah, bimah) building needs (e.g. emergency repairs, maintenance of equipment), and cultural needs (support of seminars, guest speakers, social events, interfaith outreach).

Naturally, we are open to any other suggestions that you and your family may have. Please consider your options and give serious thought to entering into a partnership with Temple to help secure the future of our congregation, while helping yourself and your family at the same time.

Temple is fortunate to have an extraordinary community.  Each year, we welcome widows and widowers, seniors on fixed incomes, single parents struggling to support their children, and young singles and couples just beginning their involvement in the Jewish community.
